Daniel creates dreamy settings with carefully engineered compositions; reimagining warm Mediterranean gardens, atmospheric pools, and surreal, contemplative spaces - while using a realist visual style. He works from his home studio in the Chiltern hills.
A significant source of his inspiration comes from young memories of the inland mountains of the Costa Blanca. This period represents a fleeting window of safety and innocence - before any awareness of judgement from others took hold. The richness of local Iberian culture, the diversity of the expatriate community, and the beauty of the homes and gardens left a deeply romantic mark. This is a stark contrast with later experiences of prolonged alienation and insecurity.
The sights, smells, sounds and emotional safety of that earlier time now resurface as a powerful sense of nostalgia continually explored in his paintings.
Nature and horticulture are central to Daniel’s life and artistic practice; alongside his studio work, he grows and sells plants locally. This dual existence - split between garden and studio - forms a natural synergy, with each continually informing and enriching the other.
His compositions emerge through a layered process that draws on memory, imagination, small-scale models, direct observation, photography, and geometry. By deconstructing places and ideas and carefully reassembling them, he creates scenes that feel both intimate and quietly familiar. He typically works in oils for nocturnal pieces, capturing depth and atmosphere, while acrylics allow him to convey the intensity and clarity of daylight.
Collaboration
I'm always open to talking about my work or taking part in exhibitions. I'm also interested in collaborating with other artists or creatives to share expertise and conceptual ideas. If you have an opportunity and think it might be of mutual creative value, then do get in touch.
Painting: Costa Blanca Mountains in the 1980s
Thoughtfully placed peseta coins surround the frame. Pesetas served more than an economic purpose; they were a part of everyday life for many bygone eras - a rich part of culture and Spanish history. Millions now sit redundant at the back of people’s drawers. Here, Daniel has brought them into the open and used them to indulge viewers in Mediterranean nostalgia.
